Gul-e-Rana, a drama serial that centres upon the love-hate relationship of Adeel (Feroze Khan) and Gul-e Rana (Sajal Ali) has taken a slight turn for the better. In the latest episode Adeel, the show’s boisterous hero, who was responsible for hurting and degrading Gul-e-Rana since the very beginning, has sobered up after going through a terrible accident. Prior to this tragedy, Khan’s character, a fine concoction of misogyny and manipulation, would always get away with things. The accident has, for the time being, put a stop to it.
In Gul-e-Rana, the story begins on a negative note since the couple at the heart of the show didn’t hook up out of love but out of ego. The show takes yet another turn as Gul-e-Rana finally announces her decision to part ways from her unbearable spouse but is forced to reconsider when Adeel’s father requests her to come back in order to take care of his son.
Even though Rana agrees to take care of Adeel, she never shows any interest in spending time with her husband nor does she talk to him. In fact, she talks to everyone who comes to visit them except him.
Though the play is full of cliches and hackneyed plotlines, Khan and Ali carry this play forward on their shoulders and act very well. Watch it for their individual performances if nothing else.
